A letter addressed to the strategi of the Heptanomia and Arsinoite nome from a high official known as Africanus (possibly Arbaeus Africanus, governor of Palestine, or Nervaeus or Servaeus). The sender is complaining about the expenses caused by the multiplication of officials related to estates of the treasury, and instructs that only one superintendent be appointed per estate, assisted by two or three persons. Dated in the 5th year of Diocletian and 4th of Maximian, Thoth 16 (13 September 288).

A papyrus sheet written on one side, with a few wormholes; overall well preserved, although somewhat damaged at the bottom. Number 58 in red refers to the publication in P.Oxy I. The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in one glass case.

Provenance: Oxyrhynchus, Oxyrhynchite nome, Egypt. Presented as part of a lot comprising Papyri 739-834 by the Egypt Exploration Fund in October 1900. Of these, papyri 739-814 form part of the discoveries made by B. P. Grenfell and A. S. Hunt on the site of the ancient Oxyrhynchus.
