Petition addressed to Aurelius Aetius, former magistrate in Oxyrhynchus, with regards to a dispute between Aurelius Ptolemaeus, son of Horion, and two other men from the village of Lile. The dispute concerns some property inherited by Ptolemaeus from his grandmother and occupied by the defendants; with previous documentation enclosed and subscriptions. A copy is contained in Papyrus 754(B).
Papyrus 754(A), lines 1-7 and Papyrus 754(B), lines 1-6: Petition from Aurelius Ptolemaeus to Aurelius Aetius concerning the dispute over property and enclosing further documentation;
Papyrus 754(A), lines 8-12, and Papyrus 754(B), lines 7-10: Letter from the prefect of Egypt Flavius Antonius Theodorus to Aurelius Aetius, as a response to an application from Ptolemaeus, stating that Aetius should be appointed as judge of the dispute;
Papyrus 754(A), lines 13-22, and Papyrus 754(B), lines 11-20: Petition from Aurelius Ptolemaeus to the prefect Flavius Antonius Theodorus, describing his side of the case and asking that Aurelius Aetius be appointed as judge of the dispute and that enquiries be made as to whether the land belonged to his grandmother and whether the lady ever made written cession to the defendants.

Fragments of two incomplete papyrus sheets, written on one side, one being the copy of the other; mounted on cardboard and housed in two glass cases named Papyrus 754(A) and 754(B). Both sheets display gaps throughout. The numbers in red refer to the publication in P.Oxy I.

Dimensions: Papyrus 754(A): 255 x 365 mm; Papyrus 754(B): Left-hand side fragment: 250 x 250 mm; right-hand side fragment: 180 x 145 mm. Housed in two glass cases measuring 305 x 410 mm and 300 x 445 mm respectively.
Script: Medium-sized fluent cursive hand; different hands for subscriptions at the end.

Origin: Oxyrhynchus, Oxyrhynchite nome, Egypt.
Provenance: Oxyrhynchus, Oxyrhynchite nome, Egypt. Presented as part of a lot comprising Papyri 739-834 by the Egypt Exploration Fund in October 1900. Of these, papyri 739-814 form part of the discoveries made by B. P. Grenfell and A. S. Hunt on the site of the ancient Oxyrhynchus.
