A contract whereby Tryphon, of Oxyrhynchus, apprentices his son Thoonis to Ptolemaeus, weaver of Oxyrhynchus, for the period of one year. Tryphon shall cover his son’s expenses, but Ptolemaeus shall pay 5 drachmas per month and 12 drachmas on account of clothing at the end of the contract. Penalty fees apply to both parties if the boy does not work for the full period and if he is not instructed properly. With subscription of Ptolemaeus written by Zoilus on his behalf as he is illiterate.

Papyrus sheet, complete, with few insect holes along the folds. Writing runs along the fibres on one side, the back being blank. The text is complete and consists of 46 lines; lines 37-46 are indented. There is little surface damage occasionally. All margins are extant, with the blank space at the bottom measuring 135 mm. No margin was left to the right. The number in red refers to the publication in P.Oxy. II. The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in a glass case.

Script: Regular and neat rounded hand, occasionally smaller in places and often with detached letters; different hand from line 37, rough and cursive.

Origin: Oxyrhynchus, Oxyrhynchite nome, Egypt.
Provenance: Oxyrhynchus, Oxyrhynchite nome, Egypt. Presented as part of a lot comprising Papyri 739-834 by the Egypt Exploration Fund in October 1900. Of these, papyri 739-814 form part of the discoveries made by B. P. Grenfell and A. S. Hunt on the site of the ancient Oxyrhynchus.
