Loan for the Purchase of a House (SB X 10249, P.Oxy. II 318, P.Lond. III 802 descr., TM 16687)
- Scope & Content:

A contract for a loan of 160 drachmas of silver to be repaid within the following year, the lessor being Antiphanes, son of Heraclas, and the lessee Tryphon, son of Dionysius, both of Oxyrhynchus. The loan is intended to cover the outstanding sum for the purchase of a house that Antiphanes himself had sold to Tryphon. As soon as the loan is repaid, Antiphanes’ son shall leave the house. The text was crossed out.

Incomplete papyrus sheet, severely mutilated at the top and in the lower half, and worm-eaten throughout the preserved portion. The surface is abraded in few places. The text runs along the fibres on one side, the back being blank. Parts of one column of 35 lines survive, with lines 5-17 being better preserved and mostly complete. The text was crossed out. Parts of the left and upper margins survive; no margin was left to the right. The number in red refers to the publication in P.Oxy. II. The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in a glass case.

Script: Well-formed upright semi-cursive hand of good size, bilinear and with rounded letter forms.

Origin: Oxyrhynchus, Oxyrhynchite nome, Egypt.
Provenance: Oxyrhynchus, Oxyrhynchite nome, Egypt. Presented as part of a lot comprising Papyri 739-834 by the Egypt Exploration Fund in October 1900. Of these, papyri 739-814 form part of the discoveries made by B. P. Grenfell and A. S. Hunt on the site of the ancient Oxyrhynchus.
