Phanias, agent of Phanias, asks the notary (agoranomos) of Oxyrhynchus to register a three-year mortgage contract of three-fifths of a three-storey house for a loan of 400 drachmas of silver. The house includes a cellar, courts, and a stone well among the other things. The mortgagee is Thonis, son of Thonis, and the mortgager Tbekis, daughter of Hierax. No interest is to be paid, but the mortgagee has the right to live in the house on condition that he pays the annual fee for renewing the mortgage.

Papyrus sheet, broken off at the bottom and with some surface damage in the preserved portion. Writing runs along the fibres on one side, the back being blank. One column of 23 lines survives, with the last three lines quite mutilated. Left and right margins are extant; no margin was left to the right. The number in red refers to the publication in P.Oxy. II. The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in a glass case.

Script: Proficient cursive hand of small size, with a tendency to become larger; mostly upright, although some of the long verticals slightly slant to the right.

Origin: Oxyrhynchus, Oxyrhynchite nome, Egypt.
Provenance: Oxyrhynchus, Oxyrhynchite nome, Egypt. Presented as part of a lot comprising Papyri 739-834 by the Egypt Exploration Fund in October 1900. Of these, papyri 739-814 form part of the discoveries made by B. P. Grenfell and A. S. Hunt on the site of the ancient Oxyrhynchus.
