In this short order, formulated as a letter in Greek, the centurion Domitius Annianus addresses the ‘elders’ and ‘public officials’ (presbyteroi and demosioi) of the village of Taurinos, close to Euhemeria in the Fayum, ordering them to keep the service of guard (paraphylake) they were currently performing. At the bottom of the sheet, the centurion himself – or another scribe – adds a Latin dating formula (III K(alendas) Apriles). Dated 30 May.

- Fragment from a papyrus sheet. The document is written on the recto, along the fibres. There is one column of 10 lines. The verso is blank. The bay-brown papyrus preserves the right (10 mm), and the upper (10 mm) margins. The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in a glass frame.

Materials: Papyrus.
Dimensions: 122 x 102 mm; housed in a glass frame measuring 170 x 155 mm.
Script: The script is a small and clear Greek semi-cursive. Rough breathings occur twice. The Latin date, perhaps added by a second hand (the centurion’s?) is in a regular old Roman cursive, with ligatures.

Provenance: Egypt; excavations in the Fayum led by D. G. Hogarth, B. P. Grenfell and A. S. Hunt in 1895–6 and 1898–9. Presented as part of a lot comprising Papyri 739-834 by the Egypt Exploration Fund in October 1900.
