Diploma of membership to a guild of athletes given to the boxer Herminus alias Morus, of Hermopolis.
Papyrus 1178(1): Summary of the diploma, with a shorter version of the circular of the synod of athletes.
Papyrus 1178(2), lines 1-8: Letter of the emperor Claudius to the synod of athletes, with thanks for the golden crown he was sent for his victories. Dated to 46.
Papyrus 1178(2), lines 9-24: Letter of the emperor Claudius to the synod of athletes, with thanks for performing games in his honour. Dated to 47.
Papyrus 1178(2), lines 25-29: Letter of the emperor Vespasian confirming the privileges granted to the guild by Claudius.
Papyrus 1178(2), lines 30-37: Notification to the members of the guild of the membership of Herminus and his payment of the fee, equalling 100 denarii.
Papyrus 1178(2), line 38-end: Dating clause.
Papyrus 1178(3), lines 1-16: List of the officials of the guild, with full titles.
Papyrus 1178(3), line 17-end: Subscriptions of the officials, and acknowledgment of the payment by Herminus of an additional fee of 50 denarii.

Portions of papyrus roll, housed in three glass frames named Papyrus 1178(1), Papyrus 1178(2), and Papyrus 1178(3); damaged by holes throughout and written on one side, the back being blank. Papyrus 1178(2) and Papyrus 1178(3) are mounted on cardboard; Papyrus 1178(1) preserves three seals on the back. Writing runs along the height of the roll.
Papyrus 1178(1): Sheet glued at the beginning of the roll; 7 lines written along the fibres, abraded in places; blank space between lines 1 and 2; margins are extant. On the back at the bottom there are three seals. Sheet-joins running along the width are visible.
Papyrus 1178(2): Light-coloured by patches, with minor abrasion and holes especially in the left half; 42 lines written across the fibres, few of which lack the beginnings. A strip of horizontal fibres was glued onto the surface in the upper half. Three stains are visible at the top.
Papyrus 1172(3): With darker patches; mutilated in the left-hand side and at the bottom, with detached scrap; with surface damage in places. 50 lines written across the fibres, some of which lack the beginnings.

Dimensions: Papyrus 1178(1): 335 x 255 mm; Papyrus 1178(2): 412 x 244 mm; Papyrus 1178(3): 550 x 251 mm. Housed in three glass frames measuring 385 x 295 mm, 460 x 295 mm, and 615 x 295 mm respecitively.
Script: Papyrus 1178(1), line 1: Thin, rapid cursive of small size; line 2-end: Thin cursive hand, somewhat uneven and irregular in size, larger than the first; Papyrus 1178(2)-Papyrus 1178(3) up to line 16: Neat, regular and proficient upright cursive hand with some elongated strokes; Papyrus 1178(3), lines 17-21: Small and rough detached hand; lines 22-23: Rough and uneven detached hand; lines 24-28 (28 in lacuna): Thin, slow detached hand, with well-spaced letters, bilinear, with corrections; lines 29-32: Thin, upright hand, with ligatured letters; lines 33-34: Large, uneven, upright cursive hand. Same hand as Papyrus 1178(2)-Papyrus 1178(3) lines 1-16 for Frisch, different hand for Wilcken and Vandoni); lines 35-39: Somewhat uneven and inexperienced cursive hand, thin and upright; lines 40-44: Thick and small detached hand; lines 45-47: Rough and inexperienced detached hand of medium size; lines 45-48: Thin, rough and inexperienced hand, rather uneven, with some ligatured letters, and erasure; lines 49-50: Thin, upright hand of fair size.
