Lease of a Vineyard (P.Oxy. IV 729, TM 20429)

Four-year sub-lease of a vineyard, comprising vines, a rose garden and a reed plantation, from Sarapion to Ammonius and Ptollas. Provisions are made as to the expenses to be covered, the work at the dykes, the supply of pigeon dung for manuring, the guarding, costs for irrigation, with a loan of money and cattle to be provided by the lessor. The rent is to be paid with half produce of wine in addition to a fixed amount of wine, and penalty applies in case of failure of the payment. A piece of dry land is also being rent for a period of three years, starting one year after the contract, at a rent of 60 drachmas per year in addition to half of the produce presumably. The lessees will be provided with two rent-free rooms in the farmstead. With subscriptions of the lessees written by Ptolemaeus as they were illiteate, followed by another agreement, drawn up one year later, acknowledging the loan of livestock, whose estimated value is 2500 drachmas.

Fragment of a papyrus roll, broken off at the top and bottom, with detached fragments at the bottom; with holes and surface damage. Writing runs along the fibres on one side, the back being blank. There is one wide column of which 46 lines survive. Of the first three and last lines only few traces remain. Lines lack the beginnings, with an average of 35-40 letters lost. Folding lines are visible. The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in a glass case.

Script: Regular and neat upright cursive hand of small size. Signatures: End of line 35-line 38: Large, inexperienced and rough hand, detached but with some ligatures. End of line 38-end: Small, regular upright cursive hand.
