The priest Pasis acknowledges that he has received from Paris, agent of the nomarch Harimouthes, wheat, barley and olyra (emmer wheat), for a total value of 90 artabas of wheat, as seed for the royal holding he is renting. He undertakes to return the seed he has received and deliver the rent at the royal granaries. With Pasis’ subscription in Demotic at the end. Papyrus 1840 is a duplicate copy, without subscription.

Long and narrow dark-brown papyrus sheet reused as mummy cartonnage, with plaster residue and surface damage, and torn at the top; written on one side along the fibres, the back being blank. There is one column 28 lines, the last two being in Demotic. Side margins are minimal. The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in a glass frame.

Dimensions: 261 x 90 mm; housed in a glass frame measuring 320 x 140 mm.
Script: Skilled, neat and thin upright hand, with ligatures in places and slightly uneven towards the ends of the lines; Demotic in the last two lines.

Origin: Oxyrhynchite nome, Egypt.
Provenance: Ankyropolis (El-Hiba), Egypt. Presented as part of a lot comprising Papyri 1821-1841 by the Egypt Exploration Fund in January 1909. They were extracted from mummy cartonnage obtained by Bernard Pyne Grenfell (b. 1869, d. 1926) and Arthur Surridge Hunt (b. 1871, d. 1934) at Hibeh in 1902.
