Contract for Sureties (P.Hib. I 91, TM 2821)

Mnason and Hegemon undertake to be the sureties for the defendant Timocles, son of Simos, and to deliver him at Herakleopolis before the strategus for the trial. A certain Apollonius demands 300 drachmas with an interest of 100 drachmas from Timocles, which the sureties will have to pay along with any other charges should they fail to produce the defendant.

Fragment of a papyrus sheet, reused as mummy cartonnage, with plaster residue. The sheet breaks off at the bottom and is damaged by holes throughout. The front bears 22 lines written along the fibres; on the back there are traces of effaced writing and of the mummy decoration, along with a modern annotation. The papyrus is housed in a glass frame.

Dimensions: 113 x 93 mm; housed in a glass frame measuring 165 x 145 mm.
Script: Small and thick hand, with more cursive sequences of letters.

Origin: Mouchinaryo, Oxyrhynchite nome, Egypt.
Provenance: Ankyropolis (El-Hiba), Egypt. Presented as part of a lot comprising Papyri 1821-1841 by the Egypt Exploration Fund in January 1909. They were extracted from mummy cartonnage obtained by Bernard Pyne Grenfell (b. 1869, d. 1926) and Arthur Surridge Hunt (b. 1871, d. 1934) at Hibeh in 1902.
