Land-Survey Register (P.Oxy. VI 918, TM 28335) and ‘Hellenica Oxyrhynchia’ (P.Oxy. V 842, TM 59483, LDAB 583, MP3 2189)
- Scope & Content:
-
Recto (P.Oxy. VI 918, TM 28335): Land-survey register, arranged in several columns, some of which very damaged, and containing a list of plots of crown land in an unspecified village located in the south-west of the Arsinoite nome, near Ibion Argaiou. Individual holdings are grouped in larger plots, of which geographical position, size, rents and adjacent areas are first given. A double system of numbering each larger lot was used, the first concerning this register, the second related to a more extensive register. A detailed description of individual plots belonging to a specific section is then given, listing the physical position of the plot, the name of the lessee or cultivator, size and rent, adjacent plots, changes with regards to the rent as the result of reassessment. Column 1 of Papyrus 1843(1) is written in a different hand and contains a concluding summary; further detached and unplaced fragments housed in Papyrus 1843(4).
Verso (P.Oxy. V 842, TM 59483, LDAB 583, MP3 2189): The papyrus contains part of the ‘Hellenica Oxyrhynchia’, the authorship of which is debated, and relates events that took place around 395 BC, focusing on the naval operations by Conon in Caunus and Rhodes against the Spartans, Agesilaus’ campaigns in Asia Minor and the causes of the outbreak of the Corinthian war. Two years are explicitly mentioned, the eighth and the ninth, source of debate among scholars. At least 21 columns survive, each containing an average of 40 lines with the exception of column 5, which consists of 60 lines; the columns are approximately 85 mm wide and between 160 and 200 mm high. The intercolumnium is between 18 and 20 mm on average. The columns were divided into sections A-D by the editors; further fragments, numbered as 16-72 (fr. 65 not belonging here) in addition to 9 unnumbered fragments with no writing on the verso, have not been localised and are housed in Papyrus 1843(4).
Papyrus 1843(1)verso, columns 1- 4 = Section A: Aids sent from Athens to Conon and his fleet in Caunus; excursus on previous events; beginning of the narrative on the events of the eighth year.
Papyrus 1843(1)verso, columns 5 – 8 = Section B: Agesilaus’ campaign in Asia Minor (spring 395); battle of Sardis.
Papyrus 1843(2)verso, columns 1-2 (= 9-10 of the roll) with fragments 8-15 = Section C: broken; with description of a character, whose name is lost.
Papyrus 1843(2)verso, columns 3 (=11 of the roll) -Papyrus 1843(3)verso column 5 (= 21of the roll) = Section D: Democratic revolution in Rhodes; on the Boeotian constitution; prelude to the Corinthian war; Agesilaus’ army in Asia Minor.
Papyrus 1843(4)verso: unplaced fragments.
