- Title:
- Copy of a Birth Declaration (P.Oxy. VI 894, Chrest.Wilck. 213, CPL 158; ChLA III + XLVIII 214, TM 20356)
- Scope & Content:
-
The document is a copy of a birth declaration of a legitimate Roman child, whose name is almost completely lost (line 6: ]num). As the piece was found in Oxyrhynchus and the declaration (professio) took place at the prefect’s office in Alexandria, we can surmise that this is the copy given to the parents and not a copy from the album in the prefect’s office. The dating formula (lines 1–2), partially lost in lacuna, mentions a regnal year of Septimius Severus, which must be the fourth (195-196 AD), as the Emperor’s titles Arabicus and Adiabenicus in combination with the prefect’s name Primianus (line 4) suggest. On the verso traces of Latin writing, perhaps figures.
