Letter from the Archive of Paieous (P.Lond. VI 1914, TM 16852)
- Scope & Content:
-
A letter to Paieous and Patabeit, priests of the monastery of Phathor, from Callistus, who is reporting on events that took place in Alexandria and concerned the Meletian community. In the evening of Pachon 24 some members had been maltreated and beaten up by Athansius’ adherents and soldiers, who were in a drunken state. Callistus also reports that Athanasius was despondent as a result of some news he had received, and was causing further distress to the Meletians, imprisoning some and banishing others. With the address on the back written upside down in relation to the text.
