Letter to Paieous Concerning a Debtor (P.Lond. VI 1916, TM 16854)

A letter to the priest Paieous and the Meletian community from Herieous and Moses, concerning the vicissitudes of Pamontheis, a fellow member and a wine-seller who had to borrow a large sum of money which he was unable to pay back. As a result, he had his children carried off by the creditors. Herieous and Moses did their best to help him, and are now asking for further help in collecting money. On the back there is a postscript from Herieous to Paieous. Another letter on the same subject is Papyrus 2544 (P.Lond. VI 1915).

Light-brown papyrus sheet, discoloured in places; damaged throughout and lacking the top right half; writing is across the fibres on either side. On the front there are two lines written along the fibres from top to bottom in the left margin. Mounted in a glass case.

Dimensions: 230 x 196 mm; housed in a glass case measuring 285 x 235 mm.
Script: Medium-sized, clear, sloping cursive hand. Same hand as Papyrus 2544 (P.Lond. VI 1915).

Provenance: Phathor, Egypt. Purchased as part of a lot comprising Papyri 2543-2551 from Maurice Nahman (b. 1868, d. 1948) in September 1923. Part of a joint purchase with the University of Michigan, Columbia University and the University of Oslo.
