Letter of Recommendation from Proclus to Asclepiades (TM 10546)

Left portion of a letter, the right portion of which is P.Col. VIII 211, in which Proclus recommends to Asclepiades, dioiketes, the bearer of the letter, Isidorus, a cultivator from Psophtis in the Memphite nome. Isidorus had a dispute with Tryphon, strategus of the Arsinoite nome, concerning a sworn declaration on the cultivation of some land on the estate of the empress Livia near Philadelphia, and Proclus is asking that the man be assisted.

Left-hand portion of a papyrus sheet, the right-hand part of which is at the Columbia University, published as P.Col. VIII 211. Writing is on one side along the fibres; top, left and bottom margin of the BL fragment extant. Mounted on cardboard in a glass case.

Materials: Papyrus.
Dimensions: 200 x 95 mm, mounted in a glass case measuring 250 x 145 mm.
Script: Upright hand, with a tendency for descending uprights to have serifs; the postscript in the last two lines was written by a second hand, smaller, more cursive and sloping to the right.

Provenance: Arsinoite nome, Egypt. Purchased by Dr. David L. Askren (b. 1875, d. 1939) in the Fayum in June 1923; presented with Papyrus 2552 by Francis Willey Kelsey (b. 1858, d. 1927) on behalf of the University of Michigan on 10 November 1923.
