Record of Legal Proceedings (P.Thomas 25, ChLA III 217, TM 78802)
- Scope & Content:
-
This fragmentary document reports the proceedings of a hearing held by a praeses Arcadiae. Despite its scantiness, the preserved text suggests that a procedure per libellum was followed. The plea, probably lodged by at least two people, mentions a city councilman and probably concerned matters of municipal public interest (fiscal issues?). The petitioners apparently demanded that the governor appoint local officials to deal with the matter. The decision of the praeses, unfortunately, is largely unintelligible. Given that the consuls were both viri clarissimi and the name of one of them ended in -tus, the hearing might have taken place in AD 401, 423 or 437. AD 472 must be rejected, since papyri from that year bear a postconsular date (Bagnall and Worp 1980: 114; a different opinion is argued in ChLA III: 114). AD 437 is also unlikely for the same reason.

- Physical Characteristics:
-
Materials: Papyrus.
Dimensions: 265 x 85 mm; housed in one glass case measuring 320 x 135 mm.
Script: It appears to have been written by a single chancery hand capable of producing four different styles: enlarged chancery Latin script is used for the Latin heading, new Roman cursive for the Latin framework of the proceedings (very little of which survives), Greek cursive for the statements, and enlarged Greek semicursive for the sentence by the presiding official. The cursive scripts slope to the right, whereas the semicursive ones are upright. Abbreviations are unmarked except for the slash on the d in d(ixit).
