Report of a Trial before the Prefect (SB V 7696, TM 14034)
- Scope & Content:
-
Report of a hearing held before Aurelius Appius Sabinus, prefect of Egypt, concerning a dispute over the nomination to liturgies: in order to ease the burdens of the citizens of Arsinoe, wealthy villagers had been nominated by the city council for liturgical posts. The villagers objected to this relying on a law of the emperor Septimius Severus. The city council countered that the financial situation of the towns was no longer the same as before, and that these regulations should no longer be binding. The decision of the prefect is not preserved.
