- Title:
- Report, perhaps for police action (ChLA III 218 + XLII 1225, CPL 121, TM 70017), and Treatise on Grammar (P.Lond.Lit. 184, TM 63851, LDAB 5065, MP3 2996)
- Scope & Content:
-
Recto (TM 70017): This report details actions of uncertain nature, apparently taken by centurions according to orders of an unknown official. Each action is recorded by consulships and prefects of Egypt.
Verso (TM 63851): This is the oldest example of a Latin treatise on grammar amongst papyri and manuscripts. It preserves the analysis of an unknown grammarian of the eight parts of the speech and a discussion on the formation of the syllables. The identity of the author has been debated. The text is of interest also for the reference to Greek theories on grammar, the etymological explanations of grammatical terms and the use of second-person singular and first-person plural.

The verso was turned at 180° and reused; the text on the back is arranged in columns 75 mm wide, containing at least 23 lines each. The intercolumn measures 35 mm. The only extant margins are the upper and lower ones (72 mm each). When complete, the roll was at least [28.5] cm high. Another fragment of the same roll is P.Mich. VII 429. The papyrus is housed in a glass frame.

- Custodial History:
-
Origin: Recto: Probably written in the West.
Provenance: Karanis, meris of Herakleides, Arsinoite nome, Egypt. Since P.Mich. Purchased with a lot comprising Papyri 2722-2740 from Maurice Nahman (b. 1868, d. 1948) in September 1925. Part of a joint purchase with the University of Michigan and Wilfred Merton (b. 1888, d. 1957).
