DIAETA SALVTIS: the theological Summa commonly attributed to S. Bonaventura, but more probably to
Guillelmus [de Lavicea or Lanicia] Aquitanicus (cf. 5 F. XIV). The text is somewhat differently arranged from the other MSS., the parts following this order, i, iii, v, ii, iv, vi-x. Apparently this is due to the association of the work in the archetype with others on the same subject, for at the end of the introduction (f. 1 b, col. i) is a note 'sed de multis istorum habitum est supra in tractatu de preceptis a uirtutidibus que (sic) ponitur post tractatum de veneno, sed ibi non seruatur ordo iste'. Beg. 'Hec est uia, &c. [Is. xxx. 21]: Magnam miseri. cordiam'. Appended, as in 7 C. I and other MSS., is the collection of themes for sermons, beg. (f. 166 b) 'Abiciamus opera tenebrarum, &c. [Rom. xiii. 12]: In aduentu magni regis'. Imperfect by loss of one leaf at the end. Notes in the hand of John Theyer suggest as author of the Diaeta Robert Holcot and of the themes John Sowle (d. 1508). The only ground for this seems to be coincidence of initia, and the latter attribution is incompatible with the age of the MSS. Between parts iii and v of the Diaeta is inserted (f. 29 b) another tract on the Ten Commandments, evidently of English origin, of which there are copies in Harley MSS. 665, f. 50, and 775, f. 149, Add. MSS. 16170, f. 168, and 33957, f. 3. Beg. 'Si uis ad uitam ingredi, &c. [Matt. xix. 17] Dicturi de preceptis uideamus'. Vellum; ff. i + 180. 63/4 in. x 43/4 in. Early XV cent. Gatherings of 8 leaves, with catchwords. Double columns. Sec. fol. '-cussi illum'. Red initiaig. Belonged to John Theyer 'empt. Ducklane of Hopkinson, 27 Man, 1636' (f. i). Theyer sale-cat. no. 263; CMA. 6644.
