This roll contains the household expenses of Princess Mary (the future Mary I, r. 1552-1558), daughter of King Henry VIII (r. 1509-1547) and Catherine of Aragon (b. 1485, d. 1536). The account covers a one-and-a-half-year period from 1 July 1525 to 31 December 1526 (17 and 18 Henry VIII), when Mary was nine or ten years old.
The roll includes the payments made by Peter Burnell, Treasurer of the Chamber, to the princess’ almoner, to cover her oblations, the expenses of her councillors on commissions beyond the court, the expenses of messengers and apparel of footmen, as well as expenditure on cloth, velvet and other items for the wardrobe. It also records the wages and fees of councillors, the payments made on buildings and repairs at Ludlow and Bewdley in the manor of Tyknell (Wales), and the wages of the Mary's female companions, Mistress Anne Rede, Mary Victorin, Mary Danet and Mary Fitzharberte. The payments made by the Treasurer amounted to a total of £1192 6s. 5d.
The roll also covers the payments made by her Cofferer, William Muklowe, in paying the wages of Justice Port, learned councillors, and others, which amounted to £4769 18s. 7 ½d. In total, the payments made by her Treasurer and Cofferer amounted to a total of £5,962 5s. 0 ½ d.
