WRIOTHESLEY HERALDIC COLLECTIONS. Collections relating to heraldry, etc. Supplementary to Add. MSS. 5530, 45131-45133, 46354. The contents are as follows:-
(1) 'Le xviiie livre de Bethelemy des proprietes lequel parle de la proprite des bestes', being a French translation by Jean Corbichon of the 18th Book of the 'De proprietatibus rerum'of Bartholomew de Glanville, with the following chapters omitted viz., 7-10, 12, 30, 39, 45, 46, 48-56, 58-113. Preceded by a list of the 113 chapters. 15th cent. ff. 1-36.
(2) Copies of warrants, etc., of Henry VI, John Beaufort, 1st Duke of Somerset, Edmund Beaufort, 2nd Duke of Somerset, Lieutenant Governor of France, and others, with wages-lists, orders, acquittances and other documents affecting the maintenance of English troops in France and especially in Avranches; 1441-1451 (but chiefly 1448, 1449). French. ff. 37-56.
(3) 'La coppie des constitucions et ordonnances qui furent faictes par les Roys d'armes et heraulx en leur chappitre a Rouen'. The chapter was held on 5 Jan. 1420/1. For another copy see Add. MS. 30495, f. 28. ff. 57-61.
(4) Ordinances of Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, and others of the Chapter of the Order of the Garter, settling provisionally the fees to be given to Garter King of Arms (lately established by Henry V) during the infancy of the young King (Henry VI). Dated at Windsor, Feast of St. George (23 April) 'L'an de grace Mil CCCC xxii' (? for 1423). French. Copy. For another copy dated similarly see Lansdowne MS. 285, f. 206. (10) 'Les estatutz et les loix que Olront fist des Jugemens de la Mer', containing part of the Maritime Code known as the Laws of Oléron, viz. seventeen of the twenty-four of the oldest version. They practically agree with the version printed by Sir T. Twiss, The Black Book of the Admiralty, (Rolls Series), 187 1, i, p. 89 (though hedid not consult this MS.), the order of the Laws differing, as follows (the R.S. numbers are in brackets): 6(8), 7(6), 8(7), 12(13), 13(16), 14(19, 20), 15(21), 16(22), 17(23). On the whole subject cf. Twiss's introduction, pp. lxii et seqq. ff. 77-80b. Paper; ff. i+80, Large folio. A.D. 1467. Gatherings (excluding fly leaves), i-iii 8, iv 7, v 5, vi-vii 8, viii-xi 6, xii 4 with catchwords. At the foot of f.1 are the arms, crest and badge of Sir Thomas Wriothesley, Garter King of Arms (d. 1534). On the flyleaf is a note by Matthew Maty, Principal Librarian of the British Museum. The manuscript is written throughout in the same hand. The following note appears on f.56b 'Lan mil CCCC. lxxvii et le xviiie jour du moys de Decembre fut fait et escript ces livres en la cite de Londres a la Requeste de ... Water Bellengier, natif de Dieppe Roy darmes d'irlande ... Lequel livre a este escript par Jehan Pelhisser, escollier de l'universite de Paris et serviteur dudit Roy darmes d'irlande'. Cf. J.
