PAPERS RELATlNG TO FLUSHING
Transcripts of letters of Sir John Throckmorton, Sergeant-Major and subsequently, on the death of Sir William Browne (circa June 1611), Lieutenant Governor of Flushing, under Robert Sidney, Viscount Lisle (1605), and Earl of Leicester (1618). The letters (about 250 in number) are all addressed to the Governor and are virtually reports on the state of the garrison, fortifications, etc., of the town; 1602-1616. The transcripts were probably made for Arthur Collins (d. 1760) (cf. ff. 262b, 269b) and the slight verbal corrections throughout the volume seem to be his. He did not, however, include any of the letters in his Letters and Memorials of State, otherwise known as the Sidney Papers, 2 vols., 1746 (compiled from the originals at Penshurst and the State Paper Office). Paper; ff. 276. Folio. ? Bef. A.D. 1760.
