(2) 'Meditation' of Lord Essex beg. 'Since that time the Sun hath gone about the world' (cf. Royal MS. 17 B. L, from which Birch copied it). ff. 9-10.
(3) 'Verses made by Mr. Fra. Bacon' beg. 'The man of Life upright, whose guiltless heart is free', in imitation of Horace, Odes III. 3. f. 14. Printed in the Works of Francis Bacon, by J. Spedding, vii, p. 269.

(6) The Earl of Essex's vindication of the war in Spain in an Apology to Mr. Anthony Bacon; 1598. Copy. Imperfect at the beginning. ff. 29-42b. Followed, in the same hand, by copies of the letters of advice from Thomas Egerton, Lord Keeper, to Essex, 15 Oct. 1598, and of Essex's reply, 18 Oct. ff. 43-44b. The Lord Keeper's letter is imperfect at the beginning. The Apology was first printed in 1600, republished in 1603, and again in 1729. The letters are printed in Cabala, 1691, i, pp. 216, 217.
