ESSEX (DEVEREUX) PAPERS. Vol. II (ff. 18). Transcripts of papers relating to the Earls of Essex. Viz:-
(1) 'An apologye of ye Earle of Essex agaynst all those that falsly and maliciously holde hym to bee a disturber of ye Peace and quyet of this countrye'. This is the tract printed under this title in 1603, and as The Earl of Essex's Vindication of the War with Spain in 1729 (cf. Add. MS. 4128, art. 6, and Add. MS. 4130, art. 4). ff. 1-15.
(2) Verses: six lines beg. 'Who flyes with wyngs of highe desyre', followed by fifty-one lines beg. 'Deare countrye myne take heede betyme'. ff. 15b-16.
(3) The Council to Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland on his appointment of Henry Wriothesley, Earl of Southampton, as his 'General of the Horse', 10 June 1599; with the reply. Copies. ff. 16b-17b.
(4) Declarations of Robert Devereux, 3rd Earl of Essex, and of Frances Howard, his wife, in the proceedings for divorce in 1613. Copies. f. 18.
