ESSEX (DEVEREUX) PAPERS. Vol. III (ff. 161). Papers and tracts relating to the Earls of Essex, as follows:-
(1) 'Certaine letters written by the Right honourable Robert late Earle of Essex to the Queene the Counsell and others his honourable frinds with some of their answeres to the same with an Adicion of divers other letters of noble personages gathered out of the collected writtings of many worthie gentlemen by M.K.'. The collection was used, and many of the letters printed by Birch in his Memoirs of the reign of Oueen Elizabeth, 1754. ff. 3-87b.
(2) Verses by John Hoskins, lawyer and poet (d. 1638), viz:-(a) Forty-two elegiac lines 'Ad Regem', beg. 'Jam mihi bis centum fluxere in carcere noctes' (printed in the Abbotsford Club Miscellany, i, p. 131). f. 92;- (b) Eighteen elegiac lines 'Ad Chutum et Sharpum', beg. 'Chute meae infelix consors et Acute ruinae'. f. 92b;- (c) Four lines 'Ad Beniaminum filium, beg. 'Sweete Beniamin whilest thowe are younge'. f. 93b;- (d) Eighteen four-line verses entitled 'Insomnium', beg. 'Me thoughte I walked in a dreame'. Cf. Add. MS. 4149, ff. 211-213. ff. 93b-94b.
(3) 'Flowers out of the history of Fraunce beginninge the raigne of H.
4th page 882', being a page of very brief notes. f. 95.
(4) 'An apologie of the Earle of Essex ... penned by himselfe in Anno 1598'. The printed edition of 1603. ff. 97-119b.
(5) 'Of Robert Devereux, Earle of Essex, and George Villiers Duke of Buckingham, some observations by way of Paralell in the time of their estates of favour', by Sir Henry Wotton; 1641. Printed in Reliquiae Wottonianae, 1672. ff. 121-159b. Birch has written his name and dates 8 Jan. 1752, 28 Jan. 1754 (ff. 1, 96); and 'Richard Bankes, Anno Domini 1708' is written on f. 2.
