DUDLEY CARLETON CORRESPONDENCE
Transcripts of the official correspondence of Dudley Carleton, afterwards Viscount Dorchester, when Ambassador at The Hague, consisting chiefly of letters from him to George Calvert and Sir Edward Conway, Secretaries of State; 28 Dec. 1622-10 Sept. 1624. The volume was given to Birch by Philip Yorke, Viscount Royston (2nd Earl of Hardwicke 1764) on 15 Dec. 1758 (see note on f. 1) and was probably intended to form a sequel to Letters from and to Sir Dudley Carleton during his Embassy in Holland from January 1615/6 to December 1620, published in 1757 with a 'Historical Preface' (embracing the whole of Carleton's diplomatic career) by Lord Royston. A part of the original draft of this Preface, corrected by Birch, is prefixed to the present MS. (op. cit. pp. iii-viii, xl-xlviii, etc.). Carleton's correspondence during his mission at The Hague in 1627 was privately printed by Sir Thomas Phillipps in 1841. Paper; ff. 259. Folio. XVII-XVIII cent.
