FLEETWOOD PAPERS
Original letters and papers (including two autograph letters from Oliver Cromwell) written to, or concerning Gen. Charles Fleetwood, Commander-in-Chief in, and (1654-1657) Lord Deputy of, Ireland; 1652- 1659, 1666. Most of the letters are of the year 1659 and have reference to the opposition of the Army to the Parliament summoned by Richard Cromwell (dissolved 22 April) and to the events which followed the Protector's submission to the Parliament re-constituted, in May, from the members of the Long Parliament on the invitation of Fleetwood and the Grand Council of Officers. The principal contents are:-
(1) Oliver Cromwell to Gen. Charles Fleetwood, his son-in-law, on private and domestic matters; December 1652. Autograph (except the first sixteen lines) and signed. Printed in the Letters, etc., ed. Carlyle, xvi, p. 218. f. 1. On the flyleaf (f. 2) have been pasted two snips, containing (a)'God blesse the now Lord Protector' and above it 'Marquis Worcester writt it' (sc. Henry Somerset, Marquess of Worcester 1667 and Duke of Beaufort 1682);-and (b) the signature of Thomas Fairfax, 3rd Baron Fairfax.
