NICHOLAS PAPERS
'Extracts of the State Papers and letters of Sr Edward Nicholas, Secretary of State to the King Charles I and II, from the originals in the possession of his grandson William Nicholas Esqr. and now in that of Sr John Evelyn, Bart.' made by Birch in 1750-1751. Of the originals some were formerly at Wotton, some form part of Egerton MSS. 2533-2562, and others are missing altogether (see preface to The Nicholas Papers, ed. G. F. Warner, Camden Society, New Ser., xi, 1886, etc.). The contents are:-
(1) 'Memoirs of the Life of Sr Edward Nicholas ... by himself'. Printed op. cit., p. xii. ff. 2-6.
(2) Extracts from the letters of Sir E. Nicholas during his residence abroad; 1 Oct. 1648 - 2/12 Oct. 1658. ff. 7-139.
(3) Calendar with occasional extracts 'from the Bundles of letters to and from Sir Edw. Nicholas'; 1641-1669. ff. 140-169b.
(4) 'Extracts from a MS. of Sr Edw. Nicholas concerning a History of the Long Parliament'. The original MS. containing '285 pages in folio' cannot be traced. ff. 170-176. Add. MS. 31954 is a contemporary copy of the present MS. Paper; ff. 176. Quarto. 1750-1751.
