'AN INQUIRY INTO THE SHARE WHICH KING CHARLES I had in the Transactions of [Edward Somerset] the Earl of Glamorgan for bringing over a Body of the Irish Rebels to assist that King in the years 1645 and 1646', with preface and Appendix, being the draft prepared for the press by Birch. It was printed in 1747. The arrangement is as follows:-(a) the text. ff. 5-184b;- (b) footnotes. ff. 185-205;- (c) another version of the text. ff. 206-247;- (d) 'Observations on the preceding Enquiry'. ff. 248- 253b;- (e) the appendix. ff. 254-259b;- (f) other extracts embodied in the text. ff. 260-279b;- (g) copies of letters and notes of David Hume on the work;1755. ff. 280-287;- (h) copy of a letter from Edward Somerset, Marquess of Worcester, to Lord Chancellor Edward Hume; 11 June 1660. ff. 288-290. The subject-matter of the MS. was taken by Birch from the Rinuccini MS. styled 'The Nuncio's Memoirs' preserved in Lord Leicester's library at Holkham (Holkham MS. 200) (see Hist. MSS.
