LEICESTER STATE PAPERS
Transcripts of state papers, relating, with the exception of art. 1, to Robert Sidney, 2nd Earl of Leicester (d. 1677). They were made by, or for, Arthur Collins from originals at Penshurst or in the State Paper Office, probably with a view to inclusion in his Letters and Memorials of State, 2 vols., 1746, but were not so included, most of the transcripts being marked 'not used'. Contents include:-
(1) 'A briefe Report of the Military services done in the Low Countries by [Robert Dudley] the Erle of Leicester written by one that serv'd there'; 1585. Imperfect. It agrees substantially with pp. 3-18 of the edition printed in 1587. ff. 1-6.
(2) Journal of Robert Sidney, Earl of Leicester, when Ambassador to the Court of Denmark; 14 Sept.-29 Nov. 1632, preceded by (a) his 'Instructions' (two copies). ff. 7-14b;-and (b) the memorial which he handed to Christian IV. f. 15. Collins promised but failed to print this journal (op. cit. i, p. 128). ff. 16-36.
(3) Letters of Lord Leicester to (a) the Secretaries of State, Sir John Coke and Sir Francis Windebank, during his mission to France; 26 May 1636 - 7 Sept/28 Aug. 1640. ff. 37-104;- (b) his son Philip, Viscount L'Isle; Oxford, 16 Mar. 1643/4. f. 105;-and (c) his son Algernon, 'at Hamburgh after his return from Denmark'; London, 30 Aug. 1660. ff. 108-110b.
