ANGLO-PORTUGUESE RELATIONS
Collection of State Papers concerning the relations between the Commonwealth of England and the Kingdom of Portugal, and consisting mostly of articles, propositions, objections, etc., during the negotiations of João Rodriguez Sà e Menezes, Conde de Penaguião, Camereiro Mor to John IV, Ambassador in England, for a treaty of commerce finally concluded between the two countries in July 1654. Many of the papers are signed 'El Conde Camereiro Mor'. Among the contents are:-
(1) Treaty between Portugal and the United Provinces of Holland, on the former throwing off the Spanish yoke and placing the Duke of Braganza on the throne as John IV; The Hague, 22 June 1641. Copy. ff. 1-7.
(2) Articles of Peace to be made between John IV and the Parliament of England, now newly put forward by the Portuguese Ambassador; 1652. Latin and English. The proposals were embodied in the treaty of July 1654 (see f. 64, and also Stowe MS. 192). Followed (ff. 17b-41, 110-120b) by 'The Answer of ye Councell of State'. Latin and English. ff. 8-16, 121-130b.
(3) 'A Perticuler of the Artickles of Peace desired by ye Engsh Marchantes to be graunted them by his Matie of Portugall'; 1653. ff. 43-46b.
(4) Articles delivered by the Portuguese Ambassador at conferences held on 28 Feb., 5 Apr. 1653. Latin. ff. 17b-41, 54-63.
(5) The treaty concluded 10 July 1654. Copy. ff. 64-75.
