ELLIS CORRESPONDENCE
Original letters, many of them unsigned, addressed to John Ellis, Secretary to the Revenue Commissioners in Ireland, upon public affairs, giving many details of court news, appointments and dismissals of officials, and other events at home and abroad leading up to the Revolution; 1686-1688. Among the writers are James Butler, Duke of Ormonde; Henry Hyde, 2nd Earl of Clarendon; Sir Robert Southwell; Sir Jonathan Trelawney, Bishop of Bristol; Humphrey Prideaux; Owen Wynne, Under Secretary of State, etc. The writers' names are to be found in the Index of the present Catalogue. Extracts from the letters were included by Sir Henry Ellis in his Original Letters Illustrative of English History, 1824, etc. (2nd Ser., iv), and the whole correspondence was published by G. A. Ellis, The Ellis Correspondence, 1829, 2 vols. For other correspondence of J. Ellis see Add.
