RICHARD HILL LETTERS
Original letters from Richard Hill, Deputy-Paymaster of the Troops in Flanders and Envoy Extraordinary to the Elector of Bavaria at Brussels, to James Vernon, Secretary of State; 3/13 Mar. 1697/8 - 23 Sept.2 Oct. 1699. He makes many complaints of his position at Brussels, from shortness of money to pay the troops with, etc., and speaks of his desire to be moved to The Hague when Sir Joseph Williamson should retire, gives news of affairs in France and Spain, and refers to trade difficulties owing to the English prohibition of foreign lace, etc., and mentions occasionally names of English and Scotch persons in the Netherlands. He was appointed to The Hague in June 1699 but only one letter, after that, is dated from that place (f. 67). In his last letter (f. 68) which is dated at Brussels he speaks of coming home.
