MONTAGU EMBASSY
'Extracts of ye Duke of Montagues Letters to Ld. Arlington during his Embassy to the Court of France, 1669-1672' made by Birch; 16-26 Nov. 1754. The real object of the mission of Ralph Montagu (Duke of Montagu 1705) was to make a secret alliance with Louis XIV against the Dutch and the later letters contain many references to that, while the earlier letters describe the state of the French Court, his interviews with 'Madame' (Henriette Marie, daughter of Charles I, wife of Philippe, Duc d'Orléans), etc. A few of the letters are written to Charles II. The extracts were probably made from the originals in the possession of the Duke of Buccleuch at Montagu House, Whitehall (see Hist. MSS. Comm., Report on the MSS. of the Duke of Buccleuch, 1899, i, p. 418), or from the 'fair copies' in the possession of the Marquess of Bath at Longleat (see Hist. MSS. Comm., 8th Report, p. 245).
