ROOKE LETTERS
Original Letters of Admiral Sir George Rooke to James Vernon, Secretary of State; from the 'Britannia' at Spithead, 17 June 1697, and from his flagship the 'Shrewsbury', 11 May-16 Sept. 1700. French, English and Latin. The subject of the letters is the joint expedition of the English and Dutch fleets into the Sound under Sir. G. Rooke and Admiral P. van Allemonde sent out in May to support the Swedes against the Danes and to uphold the Treaty of Altona which guaranteed the Duchy of Holstein to the House of Holstein-Gottorp. This object being accomplished the English squadron arrived back in the Downs in September. The Diary of Rooke covering the period was edited by O. Browning for the Navy Records Society in 1897, the editor, in his account of the expedition, quoting largely from the correspondence of John Robinson, Resident Envoy at Stockholm (who was in constant communication with Rooke), with W. Blathwayt, Secretary at War, (now Add. MS. 35106), but making no mention of the present MS. (for a related journal of Rooke see also Add. MSS. 28125 and 47969). Paper; ff. 148. Quarto. 1697-1700.
