VERNON LETTERS
Extracts and abstracts of letters to Charles Talbot, Duke of Shrewsbury, Secretary of State, etc., to William III, from James Vernon, at first Secretary to the Duke and subsequently Secretary of State; 29 Oct. 1696- 6 Nov. 1708. Copies by Birch from the 'three large volumes 4 to', then 'in the possession of the ... Earl of Cardigan'. On the Duke's death in 1718 his papers came into the hands of his cousin George Brudenell, 3rd Eari of Cardigan, and they afterwards passed into the possession of the Duke of Buccleuch, at Montagu House (see Hist. MSS. Comm., Report on the manuscripts of the Duke of Buccleuch, 1903, ii, p. 2). The correspondence begins with the Duke's retirement from Court in 1696 on the plea of ill health, just after Sir J. Fenwick's confession implicating him in Jacobite intrigues, and it practically ends with the Duke's final resignation of office and retirement abroad in 1700. Many of the letters were printed in G. P. R. James, Letters illustrative of the Reign of William III from 1696 to 1708, addressed to the Duke of Shrewsbury by James Vernon, Esq., Secretary of State, 1841. Paper; ff. 21. Quarto.
