SCHAUB CORRESPONDENCE
Correspondence of Sir Luke Schaub during his successive embassies to Vienna (1715, 1718, 1719), Madrid (1718), Hanover (1720), Paris (1721-1724), Dresden (1731), etc., with Secretaries of State, especially James Stanhope, Earl Stanhope, James Craggs and John Carteret, Lord Carteret, and with Ministers abroad, especially Col. William Stanhope, Baron Harrington 1729, Ambassador at Madrid (1719-1727),and Horace Walpole, Ambassador at The Hague (1722). Latin, French, Spanish, Italian and English. Among the letters, which are for the most part transcripts made by Thomas Birch, the following original letters to Schaub occur, viz.: (a) John Dalrymple, Earl of Stair; Paris, 9 Nov. 1718. f. 22;-(b) Marchese Annibale Scotti, Ambassador to Spain from the Duke of Parma; Escurial, 10, 20 July 1720. ff. 33, 37;-(c) Joseph Patiño, Spanish Minister of State; 20 July, 1720. f. 34;-(d) Passport for Sir L. Schaub, signed by Philip V and by Joseph, Marques de Grimaldo; 9 July 1720. f. 35;-(e) James Craggs, Secretary of State; 20 Sept.- 1 2 Oct. 1720. ff. 41-45. At the beginning are some biographical notes of Schaub and a 'Schedule' of his 'Papers'. A transcript of correspondence between Col. W. Stanhope, at Madrid, and Lord Carteret, 14 May 1721-13 Mar. 1724, is inserted (ff. 282-342). Also included are: (a) copies of projects and proposals connected with the Quadruple Alliance formed in 1718, some of which are duplicates of documents in Add.
