MISCELLANEOUS POLITICAL TRACTS and historical papers, some of them in Birch's autograph. Viz:-
(1) 'An Inquiry into the Rights of Free Subjects in which the Cases of the British Sailors and Common Soldiers are distinctly Consider'd and Compar'd', etc. The MS. as prepared for the press. The tract was printed in 1749. ff. 1-74.
(2) 'A Letter to a Friend concerning Naturalizations', by Josiah Tucker, Rector of St. Stephen's Bristol (Dean of Gloucester 1758). The MS. as prepared for the press. The tract was printed in 1753. ff. 75-107.
(3) A comparison, by Thomas Birch, of Thomas Carte's 'Full Answer to a letter of a Bystander [C. Morris], wherein his false Calculations and Misrepresentations of Facts in the time of Charles II are refuted', with statements from various histories and especially T. Carte's History of the Life of James, Duke of Ormonde; 1742. ff. 108-138.
(4) 'An Authentick Narrative of the Campaign of the year 1744 in Flanders', under the command of Field Marshal George Wade. Written probably by a member of the staff. ff. 139-164.
(5) 'The Ld. Conway's Relation concerning the Passages in the late Northern Expedition'. Edward Conway, 2nd Viscount Conway, was sent with troops for the defence of Newcastle in June 1640, but retired before the Scottish army in August. For another copy see Harley MS. 1579 (f. 3 reversing the volume). ff. 165-174.
(6) 'Histoire Politique du Siècle depuis 1648 jusqu'en 1748 par l'Editeur du Testament Pol.[itique] du Cardinal Alberoni', i.e. Jean Henri Maubert de Gouvest. Compared with the printed edition (London, 1754) the title-page, preface, arrangement of chapters and, after chap. xx especially, the subject matter all differ. Verbal and other alterations have been inserted in the MS. by the author. The dedication letter to 'Monsieur Humberston, gentilhomme Anglois', dated Lausanne, 10 Oct. 1753, bears the initials, supplied by the corrector, 'M.B.R.' The letter in the printed edition bears the initials 'De B. M.' The earlier work of the author mentioned above bore the name 'M. B. de G.' ff. 175-255.
