GWYN MEMORIAL
Memorial of the military services of Capt. John Gwyn of the Royal troop of Horse Guards, from 1642 to the Restoration; circ. 1660. With six prefatory dedication-letters, viz. to (a) Charles II. ff. 2-3b;-(b) James, Duke of York. f. 4;-(c) James Scott, Duke of Monmouth. f. 5;-(d) George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham. f. 6;-(e) George Monck, Duke of Albemarle. f. 7;-and (f) Philip Herbert, Earl of Pembroke. f. 8. At the end of the memorial is the author's account (f. 91) of his lineage and pedigree, with painted coat of arms. lt is in the same hand (probably the author's) as Add. MS. 11801, another copy of the memorial, etc., which contains, however, only five prefatory letters. The work was edited as Military Memoirs of the Great Civil War by Sir Walter Scott in 1822 from a third MS., which contained eleven prefatory letters. Add. MS. 11810 does not contain the coat of arms, but a description of the quarterings, and whereas the third MS. contains both, the present MS. omits the description. At the beginning are notes by Matthew Maty and Sir Frederic Madden. Paper; ff. 96. Octavo. Circ. A.D. 1660.
