PAPERS RELATING TO FOREIGN AFFAIRS: 1651-1654. Viz.:-
(1) Articles for a treaty between the Netherlands and England; 1651. The titles (f. 20b) run 'The Thirty-six Articles Delivered by the Dutch Ambassadors' and 'The Answer of ye Councell to the 36 Articles' with Latin versions (ff. 21-40). Partly shorthand. They are the propositions of the Commissioners of the States General which had been presented to Oliver St. John and Walter Strickland at the close of their mission to The Hague in June 1651. For a shorter draft of the Propositions see Hist. MSS. Comm. 13th Report, App. i, p. 605, and cf. S. R. Gardiner, History of the Commonwealth, i, p. 328, ii, p. 172. ff. 1-40.
(2) 'A short demonstration how the Imposition taken att the Sondt in Denmarke is to the dammage of the English, Irish and Scotch, also how the Danes have no true pretention nor any right therunto', a memorial drawn up by Bulstrode Whitelocke, Ambassador to Queen Christina of Sweden; 1654. Autograph. lt is endorsed 'Paper delivered to his H[ighness] by my Lord Whitelocke concerning ye Sound wch his Lordship had from ye Ld Vlefelt, a Dane banisht by his Master' (i.e. Corfitz, Count Ulfeld). ff. 41-44.
