MISCELLANEOUS HISTORICAL AND POLITICAL TRACTS; 16th-18th centt. Viz.:-
(1) On the government of the United Provinces of the Netherlands, beginning 'The government of the United provinces considered as one republick is called the Government of the Generality', with additional matter by another hand (ff. 85-94); circ. 1710. ff. 1-94.
(2) 'Observations of Holland', beginning 'They are a generall Sea-land', etc.; circa 1650. lt is identical with a tract entitled 'Three Weeks Observations of the Low Countries; especially Holland', first printed in 1652, and in a later (1662) edition the name of Owen Feltham is given as the author. For another MS. copy with a dedication-letter signed 'J.S.' see Harley MS. 5111, f. 1. Belonged to the Rev. 'Jo. Hall' (perhaps John Hall, Prebendary of St Pauls, London, d. 1707) who gave it to Ralph Thoresby (d. 1725). ff. 95-105.
(3) 'A Letter or Apologie written by Count Arundell to the Lord Treasurer Burleigh touching his title of Comes Imperij ; circ. 1595. Sir Thomas Arundell, later 1st Baron Arundell of Wardour, was made Count of the Holy Roman Empire by the Emperor Rudolph II, for services against the Turks, in 1595. Imperfect. ff. 106-112.
(4) 'Vox Populi vox Dei, Newes from Spaine translated Accordinge to the Spannish Coppe', being the tract directed against the Spanish marriage by Thomas Scott, preacher to the English garrison at Utrecht (d. 1626); 17th cent. It was first printed in 1620. Belonged to Ralph Tboresby (d. 1725). ff. 113-122.
(5) A chronology of historical persons and events arranged alphabetically, from Roman times to 1723. Followed (f. 137) by an alphabetical list of the Popes. Latin. ff. 123-138.
