BIRCH'S LIFE OF MILTON
'An Historical and Critical Account of the Life and Writings of Mr. John Milton. By Thomas Birch M.A. and F.R.S.', as prepared for the press; circ. 1738. Prefixed to A Complete Collection of the ... Works, etc., 1738, 2 vols. Preceded by a short life of Milton in Birch's autograph, entitled 'a Supplement to Mr. [Peter] Bayle's Article' on the poet and followed (f. 152) by his 'Appendix to the Life of John Milton' as printed in the edition of 1738. At ff. 133, 134 are two leaves (2ix, 2xi) of the printed edition of 1738, with additions and corrections subsequently embodied in the later edition of 1753. At the end is the last leaf of The Life of John Milton by John Toland. A printed list of Fellows of the Royal Society in 1763 is bound in at the beginning of the MS. Paper; ff. 223. Quarto. Circ.
