JOHN THORESBY LEDGER
Ledger of John Thoresby (d. 1679), father of Ralph Thoresby, the antiquary, containing lists of books, etc., and the prices paid for them, for himself, Richard Stretton and Robert Hickson (ff. 2, 5, 13, etc.) and sometimes with the names of persons from whom they were bought; 1673-1675. (For Ralph Thoresby papers see Add. MSS. 4212, 4214, 4274-4277, 4385, 4460, 4926-4933). Among the entries is the following (f. 12): 'April 21, 1673. Paid to the Rt. Honble. Henry, Lord Fairfax and Thomas Hutton, of Popleton, Esqre executors of. . . Thomas, Ld. Fairfax deceased for the bookes and coynes, etc. in the Study at Nun-Appleton the sum of one hundred eighty and two pounds'. John Thoresby became the founder of the 'Museum Thoresbeianum' by the purchase of Lord Fairfax's collection of coins and medals. Included in the volume are:-(a) 'A Discourse of Mr. Theodore Beza containing in briefe the History of the life and death of Mr. John Calvin ... written in French by Beza and now made English by ... I.T.'. Two copies, both imperfect. ff. 15-21, 31-37. ' I.T.' is doubtless John Thoresby, in whose autograph is the first copy of the translation; in a list of French books (f. 27) in his possession is 'Beza de vie du Calvin, 8º ';- (b) an anonymous dedication to the 'Lord of Schellenberge' on the 'reprinting the Emperours ... which 20 years agoe hath been published by the industry of Plutinus', and in which the author mentions his friends, Mark Velser (d. 1614) and 'Jo. Jacobus Ruegerus'. f. 22;-
(c) catalogue of French and Italian books, with a note at the head by — Battersbie, probably a bookseller; late 17th cent. f. 25;-(d) 'Livres Francois que J'ai Aujourdhuy 1675' in J. Thoresby's hand. f. 27. Paper; ff. 40. Narrow folio. 1673-1675.
