BIRCH'S TILLOTSON COLLECTIONS

Collection of papers, letters, etc., made by Thomas Birch, chiefly in preparation for his 'Life' of John Tillotson (d. 1694), Archbishop of Canterbury; 1680-1761. The 'Life' was prefixed to the 1752 edition of Tillotson's works, also published separately in that year, and reprinted in 1753. The chief contents are:-

(1) An imperfect draft of the 'Life', etc., mainly consisting of copies of Tillotson's letters to Rachel, Lady Russell, and others; circ. 1752. ff. 1-80.

(2) 'Some Memorials of ... Dr. John Tillotson ... written upon the news of his Death by John Beardmore, M.A.'; 1694. Printed as Appendix I to the 'Life'. ff. 81-113.

(3) 'Miscellaneous Remarks on the Works of Archb. Tillotson, By John Jortin, M.A.', printed as Appendix III to the 'Life'; circa 1752. ff. 114-125.

(4) Notes and criticisms of the 'Life', etc., with (f. 159) proposed additions for a new edition, copies of the Archbishop's letters and biographical notes; 18th cent. French and English. ff. 131-216.
