Literary papers and memoranda, with a few original letters, relating chiefly to Birch's literary undertakings, particularly to his work on the revised edition of Bayle's A General Dictionary, Historical and Critical; 18th cent. Names of the writers of letters are to be found in the Index of the present Catalogue. The contents include the following: (1) Suggestions for obtaining protection of literary property from Parliament; n.d. ff. 1-2.
(2) Proposals for establishing an agency in Paris for procuring foreign books, etc. in England; n.d. f. 3.
(3) Agreement between Birch and Fletcher Gyles, bookseller, for the editing of the Thurloe State Papers; 17 Aug. 1739. f. 4.
(4) Agreement between Jean Baptiste de Fréval and Michel de la Javalière for the translation of 'L'Historie de Leopold, Empereur d'occident'; 17 Jan. 17 39/40. French. Witnessed by P. Des Maizeaux and F. Aribat. A book with this title was published in 1739 at The Hague, anonymously, but no English translation is known. ff. 5-6.
(5) 'Lettre de l'Auteur a son Libraire', being a defence by Pierre Bayle of his 'Commentaire Philosophique' against the attack of Pierre Jurieu (cf. Des Maizeaux, Vie de Bayle, 1732, i, p. 200); London, 20/30 May 1687. French. ff. 22-23.
