4325. Letters mainly addressed to Thomas Birch, from the following members of the Yorke family, viz.:-Philip, 1st Earl of Hardwicke, Lord Chancellor, 1758-1763 (ff. 1-8);- Philip, Viscount Royston and 2nd Earl of Hardwicke, 1741-1765 (ff. 9-43);- The Hon. Charles Yorke, Solicitor- General, etc., 1742-1764 (ff. 44-82);- The Hon. John Yorke, 1750-1765 (ff. 83-101, 103);- and the Hon. James Yorke, 1752-1762 (ff. 102, 104,
105). The latter part of the volume consists of copies, chiefly in Birch's autograph of (a) the correspondence of Lord Chancellor Hardwicke, 1706-1763. ff. 112-142;- (b) Birch's introduction to An Historical View of the Negociations between the Courts of England, France, and Brussels, published in 1749, with rough draft of the same; 4 Aug. 1748. ff. 143- 164;- (c) abstract of a memoir of Lord Chancellor Hardwicke; April 1764. ff. 165-181;- (d) 'Memoirs touching the Scots War carried on for their Majesties Service by Major General Mackay against Viscount Dundee'. 1689; copied from the original in possession of Lord Hardwicke, 10 Feb. 1756. ff. 182-196;- (e) 'Memorandum of Dr. White Kennet ... in the Blank Leaf of his copy of Dr. Burnet's Memoirs of the Dukes of Hamilton now in the possession of the honourable Mr. Chas. Yorke', being Dr. Burnet's story of the signing of a death warrant for John Campbell, 1st Earl of Loudoun (d. 1663), when imprisoned in the Tower in March 1640, and its subsequent withdrawal at the request of the Marquess of Hamilton. f. 197;- (f) speech of Philip Yorke, M.P. for Reigate, later 2nd Earl of Hardwicke, in the House of Commons, on the British troops in Flanders; 11 Jan. 1743/4. ff. 199-201;- (g) five short poems, of which the first is said by Birch to be by the Hon. Margaret Yorke, the second is by Charles Yorke (cf. Gentleman's Magazine, 1770, p. 38), the fourth, a sonnet to Charles Yorke by his brother Philip, and the fifth from lines to 'Mr. B.'
