RALPH THORESBY TRANSCRIPTS
Transcripts in the autograph of Ralph Thoresby, antiquary (d. 1725). Purchased at the sale of his museum, 7 March 1764, by Thomas Birch (see note in Birch's autograph on f. lb). For other Thoresby MSS. purchased by Birch see Add. MSS. 4212 ,4214, 4274-4277, 4385. Viz.:-
(1) Autobiography of the Rev. John Shaw, Vicar of Rotherham, co. York, down to 1664; copied from the original. Printed, with notes by John Broadley, 1824. ff. 3-16b.
(2) Extracts from the day-books of the Rev. Oliver Heywood, of North Overham (or Ouram, Halifax), begun 1 May 1675; lent to Thoresby by J. Priestley in 1707. Heywood's Diaries were published by J. Horsfall Turner, 4 vols, 1881-1885. ff. 18b-24b.
(3) 'Memorialls of ... Dr. Tobie Matthewes ... Archbishop of Yorke ... gathered ... out of the Register which he left ... by Dr. Hen. Sampson of London'; followed (ff. 3 1 b, 33) by notes from his diaries relating to persons and events, 1585-1617. ff. 25-33.
(4) 'Some additional notes to Dr. Samuel Winter's life ... communicated to me by ... John Coppendale, of Morley'. ff. 34-35.
(5) Memoirs of the Rev. Elkanah Wales (1588-1669), Minister of Pudsey, co. York; collected by Thoresby from various registers, including Oliver Heywood's 'Nonconformist Register' (published by J. Horsfall Turner, 1881), and from several original papers by Wales. ff. 35b-40 (see also ff. 17, 17b).
(6) Extracts from the Rev. Dr. Henry Sampson's day-books; 1693- 1698. The 'Mr. Howe' who supplied Sampson with much information was probably the Rev. John Howe, Nonconformist Minister. The extracts are followed (f. 79) by an alphabetical index. ff. 40b-80.
(7) Some poems in English, chiefly Puritan in character, 1669-1681, including elegies on the deaths of Godfrey and Lady Mary Rodes, and of the Rev. Jeremiah Milner; and anagrams on the names of Joshua Kirby and Lady Mary Rodes. ff. 80b-84b (rev.). Paper; ff. 84. Narrow octavo. Circa A.D. 1707.
