ST. ÉVREMOND COLLECTIONS
Copies, in the autograph of Pierre Des Maizeaux, of letters and portions of longer works, etc., by Charles Marguetel de Saint-Denis, Seigneur de Saint Évremond, 1701-1703, being evidently taken chiefly from the author's own MSS. shortly before his death in 1703, when Des Maizeaux was collecting materials for the Oeuvres Meslées, 1705. Besides a considerable part of the Comédie des Académiciens, letters to the Duchesse Mazarin (Ortensia Mancini), and fragments of other known works, etc., the following are included:- (a) An account of the first meeting between René Descartes and Sir Kenelm Digby. f. 4;- (b) Verses, 1702, beg. 'Non, non, je ne veux plus qu'il vienne'. ff. 29, 30;- (c) Reference to the missions to the French court of Lord Berkeley, afterwards (1664) Earl of Falmouth; and James Butler, 1st Duke of Ormonde. f. 32b;-(d) 'La belle matineuse': sonnet, beg. 'Le silence régnait sur la terre'; by Claude de Malleville. f. 39b;-(e) A short account of Bernard Connor, M.D. f. 41;- (f) Account of some of the writings of Clement Marot. ff.43-44b, 45b-46b;-(g) List of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society for May and June, 1702. f. 49;-(h) List of St. Évremond's writings in MS. ff. 54b-57b;-(i) 'Catalogue des Pièces contenues dans les Manuscrits de la Beaulieu' (i.e. the widow of St. Évremond's copyist). ff. 57b-58b.
