POCOCKE COLLECTION. Vol. X (ff. 299). Funeral certificates, probably copied from records of the Ulster King of Arms, with other heraldic and genealogical material chiefly relating to Ireland; 1607- 1729. The funeral certificates were printed in instalments without arms in the Journal of the Association for the Preservation of the Memorials of the Dead in Ireland, vols. vii-viii, 1907-1912, pp. [3]-[2701. The preface to the edition, vii, p. [2], states that this manuscript was one of a series of eighteen preserved in the Office of Arms at Dublin Castle (cf. also preface to vii, pp. xii-xxiii, and T. U. Sadleir, 'Ulster Office Records' in Genealogists' Magazine, 1932-1934, pp. 434-438). The collection was at some time in the hands of Aaron Crossly, herald painter of Dublin (d. 1725), and contains notes and material in his hand (see ff. 96, 97, 111, 124b, 179b, 180, 272). There is an index by Crossly at ff. 273-278b. The MS. consists of a paginated paper volume with which other material has been bound up. Ff. 1-173b are in an early 18th century hand and appear to have been copied after 1697 (see ff. 70, 174). Ff. 188-271 are blank.
On f. 8 is a memorandum of an entry being used as evidence in an Irish Chancery case, 2 Jan. 184 1. The principal contents are as follows:-
(1) Funeral certificates recorded in the office of Thomas Preston, Ulster King of Arms, between 1634-1642, some with arms in trick. ff. 1-89b passim, 126b-173b passim.
(2) Funeral certificates relating to Norfolk and Suffolk, 1619-1626, and London, 1633, recorded by Thomas Preston while Deputy to Chester Herald and later as Portcullis Pursuivant (1625). ff. 4b, 11,17, 20, 21, 27, 34b, 35b, 44, 51b, 52, 61b, 63.
(3) Funeral certificates for persons deceased in Ireland, 1622-1633, with arms in trick. ff. 70b- 126 passim, 173b.
(4) Funeral certificates with arms in trick for persons deceased in Ireland 1700-1729, in various 18th cent. hands. ff. 175b-1 87.
(5) Miscellaneous papers bound in this MS. but not part of the original volume. These consist chiefly of orders of proceedings at funerals in the hand of Crossly and others; circa 1675-1712. ff. 279-299.
