Commonplace book of Sir James Ware, with historical notes covering period 4th-17th centt. Clarendon MS. Vol. 34. Includes the following:-
(1) A notebook of philosophical definitions. The book was originally used for this purpose, each page having a subject heading but the majority bearing no entries. There is an index to the contents at f. 241 b rev. Ware's signature on f. 242b rev. has been stroked through. ff. 1b-241b rev.
(2) Historical memoranda originally entered in the book in reverse, but beginning at f. lb of the modern foliation. Occasionally these notes are written over the reverse material (f. 90b). A number of the entries are dated 1627-1648 (see ff. 89-170 passim). ff. 1b- 179.
(3) Historical evidence forged by Robert Ware, son of Sir James Ware; circ. 1678:-(a) Account in the autograph of Robert Ware of the examination of Thomas Heth, jesuit, by the Bishop of Rochester in 1568. For a similar but not identical account printed by Ware in Foxes and Firebrands, part i, 1682, see Add. MS. 4789, ft. 40-45. ff. 193b-201 rev.;-(b) Supposed British prophecy of the sixth century.
